Millennial Adapting: The Blog

Why Millennial Adapting?

The idea of creating a blog has floated around my brain since my earliest days on the internet as a teenager in the ’90s. Using the internet like a digital journal always intruged me. Not to mention, I was far faster at typing my thoughts than writing, and I found that I enjoyed the process as a form of creativity and catharsis. While I never considered myself much of a writer, through consuming others' content online I came to firmly believe that sharing one's lived experience is a way to connect to self, create community, and even help others in the sharing process. I stopped writing regularly after high school due to life becoming the typical type of busy that comes with getting married, working, and raising a family. Add in the latest and greatest cellphone designs and I simply became content to be a content consumer versus a creator. But, the voice in the back of my mind always pushed me back towards the pen and the keyboard.

I finally had my excuses taken away this year when I was presented the opportunity to start the blog as a final project for a Web Authoring and Design course that I'm currently taking. After learning basic code and refining my goals around the blog itself, I started to build this site! The main purpose of this blog—outside of attempting to pass my class—is to exist as a space where I can share my life, grow as a writer through practice, and gain an online presence. I want to work in publishing after college, so an online presence outside of binging Instagram is somewhat important. Hooray for being here and getting outside of my comfort zone. Way, way outside of my comfort zone!

As for the name Millennial Adapting, well, I'm an elder millennial who feels like my daily mission is adapting to the next thing that life throws at me. I'm married, have two kids, and over the age of forty. I remember (and dream of) a time when nobody had access to me via a phone for an entire day. Ocassionally I feel like my existence could really be classified as survival, especially with my teenagers, but I choose to be positive and call it adapting for the sake of mental health. I jest, but really, when life gets crazy sometimes positivity and a good dose of humor is all we have. Embrace it where you can! So, this blog is Millennial Adapting because I'm adapting to life, the internet, and building skills (and a website) while doing so.

That said, everything you see on Millennial Adapting is created by me as part of a course final. It's not perfect, and I'm sure there will be many grammar errors—irony that is not lost on me considering my major—but I'm proud of my little piece of the internet. There have been long nights and lots of frustration learning HTML and CSS, but I'm immensely glad I did learn! Content is light at the moment as I am still in the creation stage, so take a look around and then come back again later to see what's new.

Running on caffeine and dreams,
Your Millennial Adapting, B
